Why does mold grow in my dishwasher?

My 3 year old Kenmore Dishwasher has quite a bit of mold in the upper back corners and a little around the door seal. Is this normal and how do I get rid of it? The mold keeps hanging on even thru washes. It is a Kenmore Ultra Wash modal number 665.13833K601.

The inside of your dishwasher has everything mold needs to grow rapidly. Mold grows on decaying organic material (soap and food particles), in warm, dark, moist environments.

There is a product called Dishwasher Magic that is designed to clean mold, mildew, and hard water minerals inside the dishwasher. It may be purchased at Sears, most grocery stores or on line at

Sears Parts Direct

Here are other ways to clean the mold in your dishwasher:

Remove the racks, including the silverware tray, from the dishwasher prior to removing mold and mildew. This makes it easier to reach all the corners and seals.

Wash the racks and tray in the sink with dishwashing detergent and a sponge to get rid of any mold or mildew that may have come in contact with them. Set aside to dry on clean towels.

Combine 1/2 cup white vinegar with 2 cups hot water in a large bowl or spray bottle. Spray, or apply the mixture with a sponge or rag, onto the seal, door, and walls, and anywhere else you can see mold and mildew inside the dishwasher.

Scrub the affected areas thoroughly with a toothbrush or scrub brush, and then rinse clean with hot water.

Replace the racks, and fill a small dishwasher-safe bowl with white vinegar and place upright in the top rack. Run a regular wash cycle on the highest heat setting available.

Sprinkle about 1 cup of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher floor, and run on the highest heat setting a second time. This will deodorize and remove any mold and mildew that the vinegar wash missed.

To prevent mold from forming on the inside of the dishwasher

: If the dishwasher is not going to be used for long periods of time, make sure you wipe the moisture off of the inside of the dishwasher tub, racks and the door seal. Also you may try leaving the door slightly opened when not in use.

If you require further assistance please resubmit question with more details. I will be looking forward to helping you again in the near future.
