How long after plugging in a refrigerator can you put food in it?
by Manage My Life Last activity date:
We just got a used Kenmore Elite refrigerator and we let it stand for 2 days before plugging it in because we had to transport it on its side. We cleaned it and vacuumed the dust from the fans and plugged it in- it sounds normal, but we need to know how long it needs to run before we can transfer food from the old refrigerator and freezer into the new one (how long does it take to cool to a safe temperature)?
I called Sears directly (while waiting for an answer on here) and they said we could go ahead and put the food in as soon as it felt cold in the fridge- that was about 6 hours ago and it's all cold and things in the freezer are still frozen (not even soft)- so it worked out putting the food in within an hour or two of plugging it in. Just FYI...

It is recommended that you wait 24hours before adding food so that the refrigerator can reach its cooling point. Its definitely a good idea to wait at least 24 before plugging in your refrigerator after having it delivered on its side.
