I have a Craftsman lawnmower model 917.372480. I replaced a broken starter rope but it will not return. How do I fix the problem?

The lawn mower is a Craftsman 5.0 horsepower, 22" rear discharge, rotary lawn mower, power propelled Model 917.372480. The engine is a Craftsman Model 143.424152. The problem: After replacing a broken starter rope, the rope will not rewind.

Remove any old starter rope from the starter pulley.

Attach the end of the starter rope inside the starter pulley.

With the pulley in place so the starter spring is locked and can't turn or come out, rotate the pulley so it loads the spring and winds the starter rope onto the starter pulley. You have to hold the end of the starter rope against the tension of the spring. Wind the pulley until the starter pulley is full, or the rope is 1 inch below the outer edge of the pulley.

Hold the starter pulley with one hand and run the starter rope through the opening in the fan cover.

Catch the rope outside the fan cover and use both hands to attach the handle onto the starter rope.

The handle on the starter rope will keep the pulley from unwinding now and you can position the fan cover for installing.
