Fred--thanks! I took off the front access panel using the diagram you have attached and then took off the drain pump filter. Clogged in the filter was a quarter, piece of metal from clothing, lint, and a baby wash towel. That the was the problem--all that junk causing the F21 error message. Saved me $$$ from calling a repair man. I had a lot of water to clean up but the washer now works great! I am glad to have individuals like yourself helping out the common man!

Thank you. You just saved me a visit from the repairman. The filter in the diagram above was colgged with a carpenters pencil that went through the wash and broke up into pieces. I cleaned out the pieces, reassembled the filter and, BAM!!! we are back in business.

A complete model number would help with a more certain answer but an F21 code on a newer Maytag washer would mean a long drain has occurred.

This can mean a problem with the drain pump but it can also mean the drain hose is stuck to far down the standpipe.

If the drain hose is to far down the standpipe then the washer might fill and drain at the same time because of a siphon action. This would cause a LD (long drain) error code.

Check the filter is not clogged and if the pump seems to try to run. See the image below for help with this.

Remember to unplug the washer first.

I hope this helps to resolve this problem but submit another question with a model number and any additional details for further assistance.
