Craftman lawn mower serial number 917386040, gas is leaking from the air filter, why and what needs done to fix?

This problem is likely caused by the carburetor float being stuck in the "down" position. Here is a link for a previous answer that provides more details on this type of problem:

Your float is stuck in the carb. Try tapping on the side of it to break it loose, not to hard though. If that doesn't work then you will need to take the bowl off the bottom and move the float up and down, probably trash in it. May need to take it all the way off and clean the needle and seat which is on top of the bowl.
