Loss of rear wheel drive in Craftsman Rotary Lawn Mower, 700 Series B&S engine. What do I need to check first and how do I do it?

When I depress the drive control lever the mower does not propel itself. I have to push. If I take the rear wheels off the ground they do move some..

This problem could be caused by a worn drive belt or a worn spring or cable on the drive system. Your owner's manual will normally have procedures (with pictures) showing how to access and replace the drive belt. Without a model number, this general information is all that we can offer. If you check the belt, spring and cable, you may be able to find the cause of this problem. If you need more specific help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your mower. The model number is normally found on the deck or the back of the engine. If you have an owner's manual, it is also found there. A Craftsman model number will often begin with 917. . . or 247. . .
