Craftsman weed trimmer won't start.

I have a Craftsman weed trimmer, model 316,796140, that will not start. I've had it for 5 years and it maybe has 15 hours on it. I drain the fuel and run it completely out of gas every fall. I can occasionally get it running, but then it will run for only a few minutes. I have cleaned the air filter and the spark arrestor, put in a new spark plug, and put in fresh gas. The oly thing I haven't done is adjust the carburetor and check the gap in the rocker arms. I'm getting spark when I take the plug out and pull the starter rope. Also, the HassleFreeIII(yeah right) trimmer head fell completely off at the clamp. It appears that there are some set screws that could be missing, but the diagram in the owners manual is way too small to tell how they hold the trimmer head on.

Check the oil level and change the oil if it has never been changed since you got the trimmer.

The symptoms seem to indicate that it is not getting gas after a few minutes. Check the fuel lines for cracks or leaks. An air leak in a fuel line could be causing your problem. A problem with the carburetor is often the cause for this problem if you find no problems with the gas lines. I recommend that you have a service technician diagnose and repair this type of problem. Here is a link for the Sears Service website that has information on drop-off locations:

The clamp for the cutting head should have one screw that tightens the clamp and then some set screws that keep the clamp from turning. I only have one picture of this part installed on a similar model of trimmer. I provided that photo in the image below. This may help you replace the head.
