A moldy smell is most likely mildew.

It is a more common problem with front load washer than top load washers but the fix would be the same.

The first suggestion I have is to place a cup or two of bleach directly into the tub and run the cycle with the hottest water available such as whitest/white or sanitary.

You may need to repeat this once a month or so.

You might notice washer cleaners such as Washer Magic at the store but I'd suggest trying the bleach first.

Here's an idea...sometimes washing machines need a good cleaning out...and Ive seen this product at K-mart...its made by Clorox...and its simply entitled Washing machine Rinse Out Fluid...or something real close to that...you pout it in through the hatch where you normally pour in bleach...and run the machine though a cycle...and that should kill that mold smell....

Hello Saswiggins,
I found a website through yahoo answers, that might be a little help to you:
Run it through a cycle empty with hot water and bleach, or you can also add some old towels which will help to wash out the machine. Then run it through empty again with warm water to make sure it's rinsed well before you put another load in.
