Why does my lawn tractor backfire when starting?

It's fine after that one loud pop!

Sounds like the lawn mower is trying to report some problem. A suggestion I have for troubleshooting tips is to check the owner's manual. I attached the link below, just click on it and enter the model number. I also found a troubleshooting video for lawnmowers that may help while you wait for the expert answer. Hope this helps!

I am no expert, but, I have a Sears Lawn tractor that was did that a couple of times. The last time it blow athe exhaust valve seat.
I order a new valve and gasket kit for it, after receiving the parts I dismantled it only to find it was not the valve broken as I originally thought, but the valve not seating properly into it's exhaust port.
The exhaust valve sleeve became lose.
I reseated it and now I am on this dam site trying to find the torque specs for the Head.
Does anyone know what are the correct spec for the head bolts so I can get this thing back together and finally cut my grass?

Without a model number, I can only give you general information. When an engine backfires, a partly sheared flywheel key usually causes it or the valve lash is set wrong. Both of these can be easily fixed. This only applies if the engine backfires every time. If you need further information, please submit a question with a complete model number and more details.
