Mold and mildew in the rubber gasket of a Kenmore front loading washer.

Kenmore HE2plus purchased in 2006. Since shortly after purchase there has been mildew in the rubber gasket. I've tried cleaning it with bleach but it can't be removed. There is always water standing in the gasket unless I use a towel to soak it up. I always leave the door open when not in use. The moldy smell is very strong and I am concerned that the mildew will rub off on the clothes as they are put into and taken out of the washer. I would like to have the gasket replaced but understand that that would cost almost as much as a new washer! I'm not sure what to do ....

I have a GE and have the same problem and do what you did with wiping it out and leaving door open, the only thing that worked for me is running the washer on hot or sanatize with nothing in it and use white vinigar mixed with half water, works wonders, and I do it about once a month. but after last load, I wipe it down and leave door open for a day or 2. hope this helps!

On something like this I recommend trying to clean the boot first, again. Please see the link provided below for complete step by step instructions. If this does not help you will need to have the boot replaced. If you decide to perform the repair yourself please get back with us on this.

Why does my front load washer smell musty and moldy?

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website:

I've already talked to a Sears service tech about this. He couldn't offer much help except to tell me the cost of replacing the gasket and possibly signing up for an extended warranty. He referred me to "managemylife" to see if others have had a similar problem and how they handled it.
