From the model and description I suspect the transmission is the cause of the noise. One thing to look for is if the basket is turnng while it is agitating. The basket shouldn't be turning and if it is then the brake on the transmisson has failed. When stopped check if the basket has a lot of up and down play then the basket hub that holds the spin basket might be loose. The image below shows how to remove the front panel so you can get a better look and listen for the source.

If you see nothing else then most likely the noise is the transmission.

All that is moving is the transmission. You're clear on the fact the noise happens no place else only in agitation.

One thing to try is to remove the agitator and see if the noise continues.

A model number would be helpful in looking up information on this particular model.

Please reply with a model number for further assistance.

I understand how important it is for your washer not to be making any strange noises while it is in use and I will be happy to be of some help. While you are waiting for an expert answer, I recommend you resubmit your question and include the model number of your washer so that the expert will provide you with a more detailed answer. I did manage to find a link that will provide you with more information about your problem: I hope my link is useful.
