my Kenmore washer won't spin and is making a loud awful noise. We have removed entire agitator assembly but cannot remove Nut Spanner, part 21366. Help please!

Model 110.20702990. Is there a part to remove nut spanner? We can hear spinning sound under the tub. Any suggestions to what may have broken? I was washing long piece of fabric...came home and found it like this. The water did drain out to the best of my knowledge.

Mark T. answered my question so quickly and with such expertise. We are amazed at his assessment of the problem and the completeness of his answer. Thank you, Mark, for all your help....and for the manual pages you sent. We ordered the parts and repaired the washer. It is like a brand new machine. You were right.....it was the motor coupling. We also found a broken thrust spacer (hardly noticeable break). We replaced the dog ears just as a maintenance issue. We also replaced the drive block as it looked pretty corroded. Great job!!!! Thanks a million!!!!!!!

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having problems with your washer. I recommend starting a wash cycle. If the washer will not agitate and you hear the same noise I suspect the motor coupler is broken. The motor coupler is used instead of a belt. When it breaks, the washer can make a loud noise when it should be agitating or spinning. To replace the coupler you need to unplug the washer and remove the cabinet. I have provided you with the instructions for removing the cabinet and replacing the coupler. The part number for the coupler is 285753A and can be ordered from the following link.

Motor coupler

If the motor coupler is fine, the problem could be a clutch, basket drive, or drive block. I have provided you with the instruction for accessing those parts. You need a spanner wrench to remove the spanner nut. If you do not have a spanner wrench, I have seen a hammer and punch used instead. Place the punch in one of the notches and tap the nut in a counter clockwise direction.

I hope this helpful. If you need further assistance, please reply more details.

I understand how important it is for your washer to not be making a strange noise since this can lead to some part malfunction in your washer. While you are waiting for an expert answer, I did manage to find a link that will provide you with more information about your problem. I hope my link is useful.
