Ice melters on deck

by cathy rudick Last activity date:

I have a wood deck and I need to get rid of the ice on it. I know that you probably shouldn't use ice melters but what can I use?

Thank you for your question.

I can understand not wanting to damage the deck with commercial side walk melters.

If I understand you correctly, this is a treated wood deck.

I do not know any melting product that would not in time damage the deck surface.

I would recommend use a sufficient amount of HOT water to melt the ice and then put natural clay cat litter on the surface that you can wash off when it gets warmer.

The litter will not melt the ice but it will add traction to the deck surface.

Thank you for using Manage My Life.

That's great that you are wanting to preserve your wood deck as much as possible. I was able to find a great website that gives great advice on taking the ice off of the wood deck.
