Coolant temp is always low

The "check engine" indicator light is on for my Ford Focus ZX3 2004. I have it diagnosed and the result shown that it might be one of the following issues:

1. thermostat defective

2. ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor defective

Would like to further know it would most probably be which problem? How can i tell it should be the thermostat problem or ECT sensor? I brought it to a few mechanics and each of them telling me the different reason. Need your advice.

Having issues with your car can be frustrating especially when you are unsure what can be the problem. I was able to locate a great attachment where you can research your issue further, while you wait for the expert to answer.

Most likely its a bad thermostat that is opening to quickly. You need to check the actual temperature at the sensor and see if it correlates with the gauge. Straight up and down on your gauge translates to approximately 190 deg. If its lower than that you'll need to replace the thermostat.
