what does error message 5d on my kenmore front loading washer mean?

The model number that you provided is actually the part number for your owner's manual. I cross referenced that number back to the models that use that manual. The Sd (5d) code on that washer indicates that you have a "suds lock" condition. This is the same failure that is described in the previous answer link provided by Celene in the above response.

Check for excessive suds (foam) in the washer. If this is causing the Sd code then you will need to drastically cut back on the amount of HE (High Efficiency) detergent that you are using in the washer. You should not need more than about 1 tablespoon of detergent for your wash cycle.

A problem with the drain pump can also cause this code to be displayed. The image below shows how to remove the bottom service panel and check the large item filter of the drain pump. I recommend that you

unplug the washer

and check the large item filter for a clog or restriction.
