How do you determine when a dryer motor switch is bad?

The heating element on my Sears Kenmore electric dryer (Model 110.96281100) begins to warm up as soon as I turn the AutoDry selection dial and before activating the start button. I think it may need a new motor switch (#3388235) but would like to be more certain before ordering the part. Would appreciate any thoughts on narrowing my heater element problem.

For Michaelyn: That model number that you provided seems to be slightly off. You may need to recheck that number and revise it if necessary. The image below shows the location of that motor centrifugal switch. I provided a link for a brief video that shows how to open the cabinet on the type of dryer that typically uses that switch. Be sure that you UNPLUG the dryer before accessing internal components. If you need more help, reply with additional details and an updated model number.

The link for a previous answer that Joseph P. provided in the above response gives a procedure for checking the motor centrifugal switch on a similar type of dryer. You can use the information in that previous answer to check the motor centrifugal switch in your dryer if necessary. I provided a wiring diagram for your dryer in the first image below. The L2 leg of power is traced through the motor centrifugal switch with the red line. The green line shows the L1 leg of power to the heating element.

Before you check that switch, I recommend that you check some other issues. A heating element that is shorted to the metal cabinet of the dryer could heat as soon as the cycle is set. I recommend that you

unplug the dryer

and remove the L2 wire from the H2 terminal of the heating element and tape the end of that wire with electrical tape so that it will not short to the metal cabinet.

Reassemble the dryer and plug it in. See if the element still heats as soon as you set the cycle with that L2 wire removed from the heating element. If it does then the heating element is likely shorted to the metal cabinet. You can

unplug the dryer

and check the heating element for damage. You can check for resistance between each connection spade on the element and the bare metal cabinet. Touch one probe of the meter to a bare spot of metal on the cabinet beside the element. If you detect resistance then the element is shorted. You should measure Ol (open load or infinite resistance) between a connection spade on the element and the metal cabinet of the dryer.

If the element is not shorted, then it is likely that you have a problem with the motor centrifugal switch. In that situation, you will need to replace the drive motor.

You can order parts from the

Sears PartsDirect

website.

The second and third images below show how to replace the drive motor on this type of dryer. The 4th image shows how to open the cabinet. Be sure that you

unplug the dryer

before accessing internal components. NOTE: Your dryer will look slightly different than the one shown below but the basic procedures are about the same. You will probably need to

carefully

release the door hinge springs before removing the front panel.

I hope that this information helps. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website:
