What is a key tail on an electric range?

Our glass-top electric range (Kenmore) has an error showing of F1 E2. The trouble shooting section suggests that there may be an issue with an unplugged or damaged key tail. What is a key tail?

The key tail is a ribbon wire connector between the control panel keypad and the electronic control board in a range. To check this component, you will need to

unplug the range

or shut off the house circuit breaker for the range to disconnect electrical power. You can normally access the control board and the key tail by removing the upper back panel behind the console. Check the key tail for damage and make sure that it is plugged in securely.

If you need more help with this problem, reply with additional details and the full model number of your Kenmore electric range.

I have a Whirlpool range similar to rf114pxsb and It is beeping and showing code F2E1, I looked up the list appliancetimers.com/index.php?page=failure_code_page&manufacturer=whirlpool&type=r and says; KEY TAIL UNPLUGGED.

Is the kenmore you are talking about the same as this whirlpool?
Thanks for your help

I had a masonry worker at home and he moved my Whirlpool range and moved the top cover out of place and I don't know how to attach that cover back in place. Can you help me hot to do it? Thanks

For R: The F2E1 on that type of range indicates that have a shorted keypad on the control board. That control does not have a separate membrane keypad with that ribbon connector or keytail that plugs into the control board. The control board and the keypad on that range are both integrated into one part. I recommend that you UNPLUG the range for 5 minutes and then plug it back in. If the code does not clear then you will need to replace the control board. You can view the parts list on the Sears PartsDirect.com website (see link below). I provided an image below that should help you access the control board and replace the top cover on your range. Be sure that you UNPLUG the range before beginning the repair work on the range. If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.
