Why does my tractor die when I pull out the PTO to engage the blades?

I have a Craftsman Model 917.272220 Kohler lawn tractor. Whenever I engage the PTO the tractor dies, why?

I tried to download a PDF manual, but this web sit when I press the Manual button keeps taking me to videos instead of showing the manual. Also the diagrams are not readable, even when printed.

The PTO problems is kind of weird. If you have a volt meter, check down where the harness plugs into the PTO clutch for power. You can lock the brake down and just turn the key to "ON" but with the tractor not running, then pull the PTO switch out and that will send power down to the clutch. Check across the 2 wires to the clutch for 12volts or better. I kind of get the feeling the PTO switch is bad because of the other problems.
The drive: Double check the belt to make sure it's installed correctly. Then try to very slowly get the tractor to move forward and see if you still hear the noise. I dont think there is a problem with the transmission because it seems to run fine in reverse. Make sure the bypass lever is pushed all the way in. Move the shifter to reverse all the way for 4 seconds and then all the way forward for 4 seconds and then back to reverse and then back to forward. Do this cycle at full throttle maybe 4-5 times to see if the forward moving issue clears up.
I'm hoping we can get this cleared up without a technician coming out there.

Thank you Wade. New problems. Now when you pull on the PTO nothing at all happens. Also I replaced the drive belt and the tractor does good in reverse, but when I put in forward it just barely moves and I hear a high pitched squeal like the belt is rubbing, but it looks fine when I look at it. It's also not smoking. Any ideas or should I just setup a house call. Sears has no drop off spots in my area. Last house call cost me $450.00

Typically when this sort of thing happens it's due to a problem with the seat switch. Check the seat switch to make sure the plug is secure. If it is and you still have the problem,

For Testing Purposes Only

use an insulated wire to jumper across the plug to the seat switch and then try the mower again. If it still dies when you engage the blades it is most likely going to be the relay. At that point, take the jumper wire off the seat switch plug and connect back to the seat switch and then replay the relay.

If the mower does fine with the seat switch plug jumped, the seat switch is faulty and should be replaced.

The relay is part number 109748X and it can be ordered

I've seen some of the newer mowers have a safety that will not allow them to mow in reverse. You have to stop mowing to back up. That's a real pain. Very inconvienent.

On my lawn tractor it's the large red knob on the right. PTO stands for Power Take Off. It's what engages or turns on the blades, or any attachments I may hook to my mower. I've had this happen in the past when there is an obstruction, or when there's a problem with my belt on the blades. I don't seem to have that problem this time. The blade belt & the drive belt are new, as are the blades.

What is a PTO? I just bought a Craftsman Lawnmower and if I put it reverse without having the key on a certain setting, the mower will shut off. Just thought I would help...

James, Thanks for the quick response. However, my question was about my PTO causing the tractor to die when I enagage the blades, not about my seat safety. Also, I followed the other link and I do not see my manual. All I see is the videos that I have no need for. If you uploaded to there why can't I see it?
