Washer started to Smoke and Smelled like Burnt Rubber

I have a 20 year old Kenmore Heavy Duty Stylemaster 902202 rev f washing machine. The other day I put a load in and it filled up started to run then stopped spinning. The room filled with smoke and smelled like burnt rubber. I could hear the motor running but nothing was happening. I tried to drain the water and it would not drain. So I have to bucket the water out. Is this a belt or something else? I would like to keep it because I hear the older washing machines were built better. Please give me some advice as I am trying to save money in this cost driven economy.

It sounds like you are describing an older belt drive washer. I could not access parts information based on the model number that you submitted (902202). You may need to recheck that number.

This type of problem in a belt drive washer is normally caused by a seized up drain pump. You will probably need to replace that drain pump and the drive belt to fix this problem. If you are able to find a model number that will work in the Sears PartsDirect.com parts system, then you can order parts and may be able to fix this problem yourself. Here is a link for that website:

Sears PartsDirect

.

Be sure that you

unplug the washer

before accessing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and a revised model number (if possible).

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website:
