My Craftsman lawn mower has a mix of gas and oil in the carburetor. Don't know if I have a blown gasket.....is there another solution,

My lawn mower was blowing smoke when I started it. I added lawnmower oil but after a short run, the mower died out. I checked the carburetor and found oil and gas mixed together. It is a Rotary Lawn mower, Model #917.375611. Don't know if I need to replace the gasket or is there another solution. Air filter was replaced last season.

Michael, when the engine is blowing white smoke, it is burning oil. Be sure the oil level is at or just below the full mark on the dip stick. If the crankcase is overfilled, the engine will burn oil. Check for any air leaks into the engine. If the dip tube is not tightened in the oil fill tube, it will cause the engine to burn oil. If you have more questions, reply here and I will be glad to help.

You did not say if the air filter has oil in it also. I expect the air cleaner is oily.

You didn't mention if you tilted the mower before this all happened. Usually when this type carburetor gets oil in it, the mower has been tilted over and the oil pours through the crankcase breather into the throat of the carburetor. This would cause the mower to smoke badly.

I suggest you clean or replace the air cleaner, clean the oil out of the carburetor, check the engine oil level and drain any excess out. Remove the spark plug and pull the starter rope 8-10 times to blow any oil out of the cylinder. Clean the oil from the tip of the spark plug.

You should not have to replace anything on the mower except perhaps the air cleaner.

If you have questions, reply on this thread and I will be glad to help.

When there are multiple problems like this an option is to take the mower to a local repair center for repair. I attached a link below to help with that if needed while you wait for the expert.
