Craftsman Lawnmower Leaking Gas

by BRIAN ABERCROMBIE Last activity date:

I have a Craftsman lawnmower, model #917388290, and it's leaking gas out of the red tube that goes into the air filter. The gas tank eventually empties out. Do you know what would cause this and what I can do to repair?

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks Wade. I did purchase the rebuild kit, and it's being shipped. I'll probably go through cleaning it out regardless as you've suggested, I don't want to find it leaking again in the future. It could make a mess of my garage ... and gas is way too expensive these days to waste. Thanks again.

Yes, that is possible. There could have been a piece of debris blocking the needle valve from closing and it moved in the process of the mower moving. At the very least, I recommend you take the bowl off the carburetor and clean it out.

Thanks. I did order the rebuild kit and will give it a go when it arrives next week. Oddly, out of desperation, I put a little gas in my mower yesterday because I needed to cut my lawn. It started right up and no longer appears to be leaking gas. Could it have "fixed itself"? Thanks, Brian

I recommend you get carburetor rebuild kit number 49-019 from

HERE

and then rebuild/clean your carburetor. You can watch

THIS VIDEO

as a reference for cleaning the carburetor.

Make sure to check the oil in your mower as this problem will often result in the crankcase being contaminated with gasoline. If it smells like gas and is over the full more, change the oil before you run the engine again.

Thanks. I read the article and that seems to be what's occurring. When I remove the air filter, there's a small plastic red tube exposed and that's where it's leaking gas.
