Craftsman Lawn Mower 700 Series

I just bought my lawn mower and it is the second time i have used it. While mowing the second time, i noticed the oil cap a little loose and some oil coming out as it started slightly smoking from the muffler. I checked the oil and noticed it was a little low so I added more oil and tightened the cap. It worked for a few minuted and then started smoking again majorly. I noticed oil dripping from the air filter compartment now and still smoking from the muffler. Again I cleaned it up and let it cool and tried again and it worked for a few minutes and then started smoking again. Whats the problem and how do i fix it?

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the new mower. I recommend checking the oil level first. If it is over full it will cause the engine to smoke and oil will come out of the muffler. If the oil level is fine, check the air filter. If it is oil soaked the engine might have been over full with oil at one point. Keep the filter out and run the engine on the driveway. If the smoking stops, just install a new filter and the mower should be fine. Just make sure not to over fill the oil.

If what I have mentioned does not cure the problem I recommend taking the mower back to the store where you have purchased to have it serviced.

Again, I am sorry you are having a problem with the new mower. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reply to this thread.

New lawn mowers would not be expected to be smoking. I located a link from a previous expert post that may help find the cause. You can check the information if you like while waiting for the expert. Also if you can add the model number of the mower to this thread it will help the expert provide a better answer.
