Kenmore washer model#11082980120 won't spin

My Kenmore washer model#11082980120 won't spin but will fill/drain and agitate. I was told it was the safety lid switch part number 279347. I just purchased it but now I need to know how to install it. Can you provide directions? I do have the parts list brochure (#3351970) but don't know how to get to the part to replace it.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

You can get one similar to this for $278 dollars. Check out the Sears web site for other choices as well.

Thank you guess it is time for a new machine. It lasted 21 years so guess it served me well.

If the motor coupler was broken the washer would not agitate. From the description you gave the only problem is the washer will not spin.

Could it be the motor coupler? Someone told me it could but doesn't sound like you think it is.

Clothing would be between the basket and outer tub. If there is nothing there then the problem sounds like the clutch and/of basket drive. The image below will help you remove the agitator. There is spanner nut holding the basket. There is a spanner wrench but it can be lossened and removed with a straight edge screwdrive and hammer.

The basket drive and clutch will run about $200 and to replace them you must remove the transmission. A brand new washer like this sales for $329 dollars so that might end up being your best option.

Thank you Fred for the diagram it was very helpful. I did replace the switch but as you indicated that was not the problem. I tried the timer suggestion and that didn't seem to work. I am able to turn the basket but it doesn't start to spin and it is difficult to move. When I took off the console I didn't notice any articles of clothing but are you suggesting it might be stuck under the agitator or between the basket tub and the plastic tub?

When the tub drains it is making a slight grinding noise like it is trying to move.

Any other suggestions or parts I should replace? Thanks for any help or suggestions you can provide.

I can help you access and replace the lid switch but it will not fix your problem.

If the washer will fill, agitate and drain then the lid switch is okay.

If the washer will drain then the motor is reversing and should spin.

Can you turn the basket by hand?

Does it start to spin when you give the basket a push?

Does the basket turn at all?

First try this. After the washer drains the water out try turning the timer off for a moment and then turn it back on ans see if it spins. There must be a pause from the timer for the spin to begin. If you turn the timer off and then on and it starts to spin then the timer is the problem.

You can also try to give the basket a push start. If it starts to spin then you most likely have a weak clutch/basket drive.

If the basket will not turn then there may be something jamming the basket. This could be a bad bearing or some clothing under the spin basket.

You can check the images below for how to raise the console and remove the cabinet to access the lid switch.

Remember to unplug the washer first.

You can reply with any additional details for further assistance.

Just replaced the switch but the washer still doesn't spin. What else can it be?

It can be difficult to locate a part on a washer. Below I attached a link of your diagram. I hope this helps identify the part!
