How does one Replace Lawnmower Spark Plug Wire?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

The spark plug wire on my craftsman lawnmower has broken off at the point where it attaches to the spark plug. Prior to the wire breaking, the lawnmower would start and then sputter off.

The model and part number are:

Lawn Mower Model #: 917.388280

Engine Model #: 143.996004

Sub Component: Replacement Parts

Key #: 100

Part Description: Module

Several questions. 1) is the above part, the correct part for the job? 2) does the above part come with installation instructions? 3) how difficult is it for a non-mechanic to install this part? 4) what sort of tools are needed for the job?

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. I thank you might have two problems with the mower. The first is the spark plug wire and the second I believe, there is a problem with the carburetor. Let us start with the spark plug wire. If the spark plug wire is long enough, you might be able reinstall the end of the spark plug wire. If you cannot reattach the end, you will have to replace the module. The module is located under the blower housing. Once the blower housing is removed you will see the module. Remove the mounting screws and mount the module. Then turn the flywheel so the magnet is aligned with the module and set the gap between them at .012. also make sure to connect the kill wire.

Now to the second problem. If the engine still starts and stalls, I recommend cleaning the carburetor. I have found a great video that shows how to clean the carburetor. Please click
