Craftsman Briggs and Stratton Engine, bent push rod

There is a bent push rod in the briggs and stratton riding lawn mower. When I turn the engine by hand the rods do not move back and forth. Should they? I also tried starting it and they don't move back and forth, could that mean there is more problems and just replacing the push rod?

Yeah, the spark plug is at an angle from the piston. If you go in diagonally you will get to the piston. I have a screwdriver that's about 12-15 inches long that I use to feel down in there with.

good question. It was long enough it probably went in there only a few inches.. It felt like it was blocked. I guess I need to angle it differently.

How long is the dowel? It needs to be about 8-10inches in length to be able to reach the piston. You're doing the right thing to check it though. If you can't verify piston movement there is certainly no need to do anything with the cylinder head.

Hi Wade,

Thanks for the answer. When I place a dowel rod into the spark plug hole the dowel rod does not move when I start turning the engine by hand. Do I have to pull the head and look to see other issues?

The rods will only move if you have them pushed down into the engine where they can contact the cam shaft. Most likely a sticking valve caused the rod to bend. Anytime I come across this situation I recommend replacing the head assembly and both pushrods.

You can order the parts needed

HERE

with the model number from the engine (on the rocker arm cover).

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Also when I place a dowel rod in the spark plug hole and turn the engine by hand, the dowel rod does not move up and down as indicated in other posts on here.
