Replace motion Drive Belt Craftman 917.28974

I need to replace the motion drive belt on a Craftsman 917.28974 garden tractor and following the instructions in the manual they seem to be incomplete as the belt seems to go around the steering rod which goes through the steering plate and the instructions don't reference this at all.

Unless I am missing something, it seems the only way to get the drive belt on or off would be to remove the steering rod - is this correct? If so, what are the correct steps? Is there an amendment to the manual?

Thanks very much for any assistance.

I just spent an hour tring to figure out the drive belt. I also could not determine how to get it off the steering column. Thank goodness I saw this post. I'll cut it off and install the new one the right way.

Thank you for the reply. I am sorry the belt was installed incorrectly. I am glad we have gotten this issue resolved. If the original belt is still on the tractor and it is less than two years old I recommend having a service technician come out and repair the tractor. Please let me know if you need further assistance on the tractor.

Thanks Mark - That is the same diagram I have, however, I have confirmed that the belt was incorrectly installed by the manufacturer (it goes around the steering column) The only way to replace it is to cut it off or remove the streering column and install it the correct way.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with installing the belt. I have provided you with an image below that shows how the belt should be routed. The belt is routed on one side of the steering column. Look closely at the image where the belt is above the plate. There is a dotted line showing how it is routed above the plate. The image shows the routing looking at it from the bottom.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

Thanks, but the video references the mower deck drive belt, not the tractor drive belt.
