Craftsman Lawn Mower (model 247.38520)....Starter rope won't pull

I am trying to attach the starter rope to the upper right hand handle on a new Craftsman Lawn Mower (model 247.38520) but the string won't pull. It seems locked. Is there anything special you have to do to unlock this string?

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem connecting the starter rope. Usually when this happens, it is because the handle is not pulled out during setup. The image below shows the set up instructions. If the handle is out there is a different problem. First, remove the spark plug. Then tip the mower so the air filter is up. Once it is tipped, try to turn the blade with gloved hands. If the blade will turn, the engine is not locked up. Tip the mower back over and inspect the cable that connects to the bail arm. If the cable is not releasing the engine break, you will not be able to pull the starter rope. I hope this is helpful.

Please let me know if you need further assistance on the mower.

take off the top of the head that has the rope in it and see if your rope hasnt wound itsself around neck and came off the pulley. doesnt sound like anything serious if it hasnt then try to pull the rope with the head off engine and see if it pulls hard. it should pull real easy. if not something in the head has went bad or spring came unwound. that isnt a easy fix and does get frustrating if you dont do it right because it will keep unwinding. before you take it apart look on the side of the head where pull rope is see if you see a metal line with a tab coming out of the side of head .pull on rope and see if it retracts when you pull if it does no need to take it apart it isnt your spring which would leave the rope itself or the tabs that hold the spring inside the head hope this helps let me know what you find out good luck john
