53 inch Sony Projection TV (8 years old) #KP53HS30:

Symptons: Rainbow screen in middle of screen on the very bottom, not clear, ghost itself when you hit video or change color/tint. The faces of the people on the top of screen is clear on top of screen. The picture is not good, audio is fine.

How to diagnoise, how to replace the parts needed, and are the parts available. Or can this simply be adjusted. P.S. Will I risk getting shocked when working on this tv, does it hold a charge even after unplugged. Thank you for your help.

The problem you are experiencing is called convergence. There are 3 picture tubes inside your TV and then the convergence circuit lines them up. The portion on the convergence circuit that would need to be repaired are 2 large IC's. The part number for these are

they would have to be un-soldered and new one soldered back.

There are several components inside your TV that can hold an electrical charge. A technician would charge about $300-400 for this type of repair depending on any additional adjustments that might need to be made after the installation of the new IC's.

: Working on a TV can be difficult due to the

high voltage

circuits inside. Always remember to unplug any TV before trying to work on it.
