Sears 42" riding lawnmower model #917.272912, the left front axle is bent. Is there anyway to fix this?

You need to be able to lift the front of the tractor in a way where nothing is going to be in the way. I hoist is generally best to use because you will be working on the front end and jack is going to be in the way. Lift the front of the tractor and use jack stands to secure it.
Then remove both spindles from the axle. Look up under the tractor towards the center of the axle and you will see 3 bolts. The center bolt goes through the axle, but all 3 have to come out. When all 3 are removed the axle will drop out (or can be pulled out). In the center of the axle there is a hole for the bolt, pay attention to the 2 bushings that go into that hole as you have to have them there when you put the new axle in place.

That's really about all there is to it. To read it and type it out, it sounds much easier than it actually is. As long as you take your time you should be fine to get this done.

Wade, It looks to me like the axle itself is bent. Thanks for the info on the part numbers, I appreciate it. One last question: Could you help me out and give me a step by step instructions on changing it myself? I would like to save the money and do it myself but changing the axle seems like such a daunting task. It seems like it is really complicated and involved. Could you help me out or show me where I could get this kind of help so that I can do this myself? I just changed both blades, and both v belts which was quite an accomplishment for me as I am not too mechanically inclined. I would really appreciate it if you could help me out on this one.

If it is just the spindle on the left side you can replace it with part number 169840. If the axle itself is bent then you can replace it with part number 418168. The axle goes across the front of the machine and each side has a spindle with the wheel attached to it. The spindle replacement is pretty easy and takes about 15 minutes to do. The axle is a bit more of a job and can take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

You can order any needed parts

I understand that you want to replace the front axle on your riding lawn mower. I have taken some time to research your question here on the Manage My Life website and I noticed that someone else had asked a similar question with a posted response from an expert. I attached the link below for you to view. I hope the link that I provided is helpful. Have a nice day.
