Kenmore Dryer Really loud metal grinding noise!

I am trying to figure out what part I need for my dryer. It is a Kenmore Model #417.98802891 and behind the drum there are sparks. Metal on metal grinding squealing sound really loud!

The dryer works fine and is getting hot, just the noise is really loud!

Hi Landell, Thanks for your help! I will see what the repair technician says when he gets here and hope for a easy fix. LOL. : ) I might get brave and try it myself, but IDK! Thanks again. I will let you know what it turned out to be!

Marcy,

That is really hard to say without being there to see the dryer. You mentioned sparks at the back of the drum. That could be the ball hitch (bearings) or the heating element shorting out. The front of the drum may have dropped and the drum is rubbing on the front bulkhead. It really is a tough call with me being behind a computer. The tech you have coming should be able to tell you in a short amount of time. Thanks again for using Manage My Life. Landell

Hi Landell, I have already been to the Sears Parts Direct site trying to figure out what I might need, but thank you for the link. I also have a technician scheduled to come out, but wanted to ask an expert first to see what you thought the problem might be! What do you think might be causing the loud metal on metal grinding noise? Sometimes it is a really high pitch and other times it is a very low pitched noise. Thank you!

Hi Marcy,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life. I know how frustrating it can be when appliances do not function properly.

Until you tear this dryer down its hard to say what all you will need. I have included the tear down instructions in the images below. You will need to ensure that the heating element is not shorting to the drum and making the sparks. I have also included a parts list image and marked the parts you will need to pay special attention to.

This can be a very labor intensive do it yourself project, I highly recommend having a trained service technician evaluate this problem. You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website:

Sears Home Services

.

Here is a link that you may use to view the parts list diagram and for parts purchases;

Sears Parts Direct

.

I hope this is helpful. Check the things I have covered here, and if I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Thanks again for using Manage My Life.
