What does code -SE- mean on my microwave display?

I have a Kenmore microwave model number 40180089700, serial number 849MM01217, which I purchased at Sears January 2009. It's a microwave hood combination. The code -SE- shows on the display, which is causing the microwave to not operate. I've looked up troubleshooting in the owners manual and the code is nowhere to be found. Does anyone know what the code -SE- means? I want to know what the problem is BEFORE scheduling a service call. Thank you!

I see pvalde2 provided you with great information on the SE error code. The SE error code means the microwave has had a Key short error. The control panel or smart board will need to be replaced.

Sears offer a flat rate labor charge of $129. No matter how big the job or how long it takes to repair your microwave, the labor cost to you is only $129. The cost of the control panel and smart board is available at our sister site

Sears PartsDirect

Microwaves contain high-voltage components that can retain a lethal electrical charge of up to 2200 VAC -- even when the microwave is unplugged. Repairs and adjustments, even minor ones such as door removals, can cause microwave leakage. A microwave shielding leakage test

be performed after any microwave service.

It is for these safety reasons that we are unable to guide you in microwave repairs and instead recommend scheduling service with a qualified service technician.

You can schedule service online with

Sears Home Services

or by calling 1-800-4-MY-HOME.

We thank you for your understanding in this matter and hope we can help you with other questions and repairs in the future.

"SE" means you have a shorting membrane keypad.

This is actually a pretty simple do it yourself repair.

The most economical solution is to replace the control panel frame assembly ("control") , which comes with a new keypad already installed.

It is part number DE94-01647A and you can order it from the

Sears Parts Direct Web site

for $59.99. (first link)

You can see a video showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes

. (second link)

The attached images show you how to disconnect the controller.

Since you're not adjusting or removing the door or hinges, a microwave leakage test is not necessary.
