Kenmore Elite Front-Loading Automatic Washer leaves a terrible odor.

Kenmore Elite HE 5t Steam Front-Loading Automatic Washer leaves a terrible odor in clothes. I have tried cleaning as the owner's manual suggests. I have purchased products that are supposed to take care of odor. I have left the door open to eliminate odor. My towels smell so bad I am embarrassed for anyone to use them. I take them out of washer and place immediately in dryer...doesn't help. Clothes I wash in hot water seem worse. Help!!!

From the description you give I suspect the hot water heater might be the problem.

There has been an issue with all front load washers having a mildew odor problem. This is why some machines even have a dedicated Clean Washer cycle.

A hot water wash with a cup of bleach added to the tub usually takes care of the mildew odor.

From all you've done I wouldn't expect the washer to have a mildew odor.

Sulfur or "rotten-egg" odors can develop in water heaters and in corroded iron piping even if the water is chlorinated city water. This usually occurs if the water has a low chlorine residual, high levels of sulfates, and/or the water has sat inactive for days or weeks.

Try running the cold water and check for smell then try running the hot water and check for smell.

If only the hot water has the smell then check the water heater.

I hope this helps. You can reply with any additional details or questions for further assistance.

I can understand how this would be very frustrating for you. While you are waiting for your expert answer, I have found two links that will provide some information for your issue. They will also provide some tips on what else you can try. I would suggest that you run a "Clean" cycle on the washer with bleach at least three times. This is the best way to kills germs or mildew in the machine. I hope these will help.
