I have a Maytag Neptune TL wash machine. The model number is FAV6800AWW.

Wash machine will not complete a wash cycle. I replaced control board but that did not solve the problem. I put wash machine in service mode and tried doing a spin test, but machine failed that test. I took covers off of machine and checked the belt, and the belt appears to be okay. I suspect that the problem may be the clutch, but not sure. The wash machine will start a wash then get hung up and continuously spin and I think tumble.

I had this machine for about 8 years and ended up giving it away free to anyone that would take it. The clothes were coming out tangled and knotted together; this was the least of the problems. THe machine had rust in many places and eventually my white shirts were coming out with rust stains. Also, after a few years the clothing starting to come out of the machine with a mold smell. AS many times as i called for service the company was not willing to help me.

Sam, I got the clutch in and replaced it and the wash machine is working properly at this time. I did a spin test after replacing the clutch and the machine passed that test. I hooked everything back up, and put the machine in service mode and did a quick diagnostic test, and the washer passed that test. I am washing clothes now and everything appears okay now. Thanks for your time and assistance with this problem. So happy to be able to wash clothes again at home. Thanks again for your help, it was greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the update on the washer.

Be concerned however if the lifter continually turns while in spin. This is usually caused by a bad one way bearing which is part of the clutch
There are also (2) - one-way bearings. One is separate and one is part of the lost motion device (drive pulley). At times the coil spring inside the lost motion device can break off one of the locking tabs on the spring; this causes the lifters to turn extremely fast. To fix this you would have also need to replace the Clutch.
NOTE: There was a production change in the clutch. (The New Clutch was introduced in MAYTAG Bulletin #TDL-0062-B) Later series on the FAV'S had the one way bearing that was not part of the drive pulley (separate cream colored part) manufactured into the outer tub.

Sam, I did a spin test with fron cover off of the machine. The pulley on the clutch was wobbling during the spin test, so I suspect the clutch is bad. I have ordered a clutch from sears, and hope that this fixes the problem. My machine would not pass a spin test in service mode so the clutch and belt was where I looked first. Thanks for responding, and let me know what you think.

Thank you for your question on the top load Maytag Neptune.

It sounds like the locking tabs on the on lifting mechanism are broken.

Prior to spin the tumble rotators should turn one full turn and then lock. If they continue turning while the tub is spinning then the clutch will need to be replaced.

Please look at the 14 pin connector for corroded or bad connections.

There have been a number of updates on the parts for this model series and if any previous service and parts have been replaced you will need to know if any of the update kits were installed before ordering any parts.

Please let me know what you find.
