Tips on replacing Drive Control Assembly (400292) on Craftsman 917.376164 mower

by ROBERT BRUEMMER Last activity date:

I've read the manufacturer's directions in the answer to other questions, but would like some additional tips for replacing the drive conrol cable (part 400292) on my Craftsman 917.376164 mower. What is the best way to remove the old spring and insert the new one into the tab that's on the Gear Case assembly? What is the best way to remove the old cable where it snaps into the Belt Guide Bracket? Can you just squeeze the sides and pull it up? Any hints to snapping in the new one? When installing the new cable is it best to start at the end with the with the spring or the end that attaches to the Drive Control Bar? What is the "Drive Control Adjustment procedure" mentioned in the manufacturer's directions? Any other tips that would be useful would be appreciated.

Thank you for the question.

I will be happy to assist you. Please follow the instructions to replace the cable.

Remove the cable from the control bar.

Remove the bolt that secures the cable to the handle.

Remove the belt cover at the front of the mower.

Remove the spark plug wire and tip the mower onto its side. Make sure the mower is tipped so the air filter is up.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the spring from the gear case.

Now use a pair of pliers to squeeze the tab to release the cable from the mower housing.

I posted a few images below that should help with the repair. To install the cable just reverse these steps. The second image shows how to adjust the cable.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
