Kenmore Elite Range Oven Door Lock

by Manage My Life Last activity date:
February 22nd

Our Kenmore Elite Model # 790.36702505 oven door locked when we pressed the "stop/clear" button to stop the oven from baking. It has been almost 2 hours since this occurred and the oven door will not unlock. Any suggestions before we contact the Sears Repair service for a technician visit?

Hello Lynn. You could have a bad door lock motor assembly or a wiring failure that is causing this problem. A failed electronic control board in the console could also prevent the oven door from unlocking. That door lock assembly is circled in red on the parts diagram in the second image below. The wiring connections are shown in the third image. The first image shows how to open up that console to access the control board and the door lock motor assembly. If you want to fix this problem yourself, I recommend that SHUT OFF THE HOUSE CIRCUIT BREAKER for the range (or unplug it if it is plugged into an accessible outlet). You can then access the control board and check the wiring connections. Check the wiring connections on that door lock motor assembly. If you find no wiring problems, then you will probably need to replace that door lock motor assembly. Here is a direct link for that part:

Oven Door Lock Motor Assembly for Kenmore Elite Range Model 790.3670

. If you replace that door lock motor assembly and still have problems then you will probably need to replace that electronic control board in the console as well. I hope that this information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know. If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link:

Hello, I have the same range Kenmore Elite Model # 7903670. I followed the directions for self clean. Everything seemed to perform correctly. After 4 hrs, the cleaning finished , after 6 hourse, I engaged the stop/clear. The oven door will not open. We have unplugged the range and tried again after several days, not sure what went wrong and what to do next?

Hello Charles. I recommend that you try pressing and holding that door switch plunger while canceling that clean cycle. Continue to hold in that door switch plunger. This will simulate the door being closed. In most situations, the door lock mechanism will retract so that you can properly program the cycle with that door closed. If you need more help, reply with additional details and the full model number of your range.
