Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Unbalanced

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio Washer model # WTW6400SW0 and it becomes unbalanced on every load during spin cycle no matter the size (even one item) or type. I've tried shifting everything around, even just running the last 10 minutes on "Drain & Spin" on low speed to try to resolve with no luck. I've read online a service pointer that says the circuit board may have to be replaced, but I've also read that the suspension springs might need to be replaced. I took it apart based on other input I've read and looked at the suspension springs which show no sign of any problem. I even took them to the local Sears parts outlet to see if he thought they could be the problem. He couldn't really help. Please help. This is driving me crazy and I can't afford a new washer.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

This can be a difficult issue to diagnose. Check to see if you are getting the UL code even when the washer is completely empty. If you do, then you could have an item stuck between the spin basket and the outer washer tub. The first image below shows how to remove the spin basket on this type of Whirlpool washer.

Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts.

You need to cheek the tub ring. The tub ring contains water to help with balance. The bearings can make off balance an issue, turn the tub by hand to check for drag. The second image shows the suspension.

If you find no items between the spin basket and the outer tub, if the washer is not having any trouble with an unbalanced condition in the wash cycle before it gets to the high speed spin then you may need to replace the machine control board in the console. There really is no way to check the electronics. The third image shows how to replace the control board in this type of washer.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website:

I hope this is helpful. Check the things I have covered here, and if I may be of further assistance, include more details in a reply to this post.

These links are good information but I need to know if there is any way to determine if the problem is the circuit board, the outer tub bearings, the suspension rods, or something else.

Finding the cause of a continuing unbalanced load error can be difficult. The expert should be able to help pinpoint and resolve. I did locate two similar questions that may help while you wait. I attached the links below. I hope some of this information is helpful.
