Why does my garage door opener remote work, but has no range?

by Dennis Emer Last activity date:

I have a Craftsman belt drive garage door opener, model #139.53914 with 2 remotes. I have always been able to open the door from 100 feet. I open the door while driving up my street. For the past few days, both remotes only will open the door, when I'm in the driveway right in front of the door. I have replaced the batteries in both remotes, and I also tried reprogramming. No luck. Any ideas?

Thanks for contacting

. I understand how frustrating it is having a very short range on your garage door opener remotes. We are here to help. Joseph did provide you with 2 good links on this problem. I recommend that you check for something interfering with the remotes range. Look on the back of the garage door opener head unit, and see if there are any blinking lights. If there is, it is receiving a signal that is creating that problem. If you've had a previous garage door opener, locate any old remotes, and remove the battery. Also, if you have a keyless entry, check the battery. If you purchase something new and it is stored in the garage, it could cause the problem. It is possible that the interference is coming from your neighbor. I hope this helps.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. You may visit
