How do I get the clutch working properly on my sewing machine?

I have a Necchi 505FA. Something is wrong with the clutch. I can't tighten or loosen the clutch engagement knob as usual. When I turn the hand wheel (or hit the pedal), the needle starts to work for a partial turn but then stops. In contrast, if I turn the knob in the middle, everything goes. I can't tighten or loosen the clutch engagement knob in relation to the hand wheel--they are completely separate, and as I said, if I turn the clutch engagement knob, the entire mechanism goes, including the needle. Any suggestions?

Thank you for the update on the sewing machine hand wheel lock.

In looking at the picture I am not sure you have a tri-ring, but there may be something similar to that. And yes you will need that lock screw.

I cannot seem to find a complete parts breakdown for this model Neechi sewing machine. So I am afraid that you will need to take the machine in to a local sewing machine repair service to see if they can find the parts.

OK, I got the lock nut off, but unless my machine is really different, it looks like I may be missing the "tri-wing locking ring" (in addition to the "hand wheel lock screw").

I guess maybe I do need a repair shop.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the pictures and the update on removing the hand wheel lock.

You will need to hold the outer hand wheel to unlock the hand wheel nut.

If the whole drive shaft is turning when you turn the lock knob, you will need to remove the top cover off the machine and hold the crankshaft to get the hand wheel lock nut loosened.

Once you have that off then you will need to make sure the tri-ring under the hand wheel lock is in the right orientation and then reinstall the hand wheel lock and then replace the locking screw.

Please let me know how it went. The replacement screw has a smooth pin on the end of the threaded part of the screw. This is a fairly generic part that you may be able to get locally from a sewing machine repair shop.

I have looked and did not find a specific complete parts list for this model.

I hope you will be able to find the hand wheel lock screw.

Hmmm. The small screw is missing, and when I try to unscrew the center cap, the entire needle assembly moves with it.

Would it help to loosen/disengage the belt? Is there any other way to access it?

Thank you for your question on the Neechi 505FA.

I believe that the hand wheel on this sewing machine has a right tighten and left to loosen cap. It should have a small screw that keeps it from backing off to far.

Remove that small screw and then carefully unscrew the center cap until it comes off in your hand.

There will be a tri-wing locking ring behind that knob that has center tabs that lock onto the drive shaft of the machine.

Put the ring back on the drive and install the hand wheel nut and turn until tight and then return the set screw into the hand wheel.

Look at the picture below to see how the hand wheel lock sits on the drive shaft.

If this was not the problem let me know and we can continue to troubleshoot the hand wheel lock.
