How to change a motion drive belt on a Sears Lawn Tractor?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

My model #is 917.28870. Tractor losing speeed in both forward and reverse. Starts slow then will speed up and then almost stop. It is the Craftsman Professional 24.0HP/42"cut, Electric start. Automatic transmission.
My guess is motion drive belt is slipping. How difficult is it to replace?

Hi, I have a craftsman 917.28726 lawn tractor.. I need to install a new drive belt. The pullys are different that those above. Their are two on the same shaft. The lower one, mower pulley, is much larger than the upper one, drive pulley. How do I get the new belt over the larger one to put it on the upper pully?

If the place where you’re testing it out is not a level surface, or if it has inconsistent traction, that could cause slowing down or stopping. But if this happens on a level surface, it’s almost certainly has something to do with the motion drive belt. If it’s not the belt itself, it could possibly be the idlers that put tension on the belt. These are show in the user manual on page 24, parts C and D. You’d still have to remove the mower deck to see if the idlers are the problem. If the idlers were the problem, the bearings inside the idlers would be making a lot of noise when in motion. Do you hear that kind of noise? Either way you’d need to remove the mower deck. If you want to take a picture of the belt path and send it to me I can help explain what needs to be done.

Could it be anything else than the motion belt? What else should I check?
Thanks

.The belt could in fact be slipping. This type of repair is a very labor intensive operation that requires first that the mowing deck be removed. After the mower deck is removed on the Craftsman Model 917.28870, the next to be removed is the motion belt. I will enclose a page from the owners manual that details how to remove the motion belt ,however, removing the mower deck is pages 21-24 of the owners manual.

Here is the link for the

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link

Changing the motion belt can be a challenge but not impossible. I am providing a link to the manual for instructions on replacing the belt on your Craftsman tractor. Any additional information, the expert will be with you shortly.
