Thank you for using Manage My Life. What you have is a Carrier Infinity system and the interface displaying the words SYSTEM MALFUNCTION CALL TECHNICIAN are displayed on the control. The system malfunction can mean quite a few different failures.
Your system has the capability of "talking" or communicating with the rest of the system.
These systems are very difficult to troubleshoot if you are not familiar with their electrical and mechanical operation you could make the problem worse. I have been servicing these units since for quite a few years now and they are continuing to evolve and become more complicated. More than likely the control board on the outdoor or indoor units is flashing an error code signaling a problem.
Since it was purchased in 2009, you are still covered under the manufactures warranty and I would highly recommend calling for service. When you setup service I would let them know that this is a Carrier Infinity system and to notate that in their system so they can send someone experienced with the Infinity system.
If you want, you can check the indoor and outdoor units for an error code flashing on the control board and you can post that here. Going into the service menu of the wall interface can exacerbate the problem so I do not recommend attempting to try pulling any additional information from the wall interface.
