How do I raise the cutting deck on my Craftsman tractor mower?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

The mower is a Craftsman Lawn Tractor with a 42" deck. Model number is 247.288811.
When I set the leaver that raises the deck to 5, it raises the blade only 3".

Is there another adjustment?

You might have already checked the tires pressure, but that is something that would cause the deck to be lower. If the tire pressure in all four tires is fine, I recommend checking the level of the deck front to back. The front tip of the blade should only be about 1/4 inch lower. When adjusting the deck, be sure you measure from the cutting edge of the blade to the ground. If all of this checks out fine, I recommend having a service technician come out to service the tractor. Please call 1-800-469-4663 to schedule service.

I hope this is helpful.

Mark.. I tried to rise the deck as you suggested. I can only get my cutting deck to 3 1/2 inches. I live in Florida and have St Augustine grass, which should be cut at 4 to 4 1/2 inches. What else can I try?

Thank you for your question.

I will be happy to assist you. The maximum cutting height of the tractor is 4 inches and has 5 cutting positions. The numbers next to the lever are just for reference not inches. To see if the tractor is working properly, park the tractor on a hard level surface. Then remove the key and lift the deck all the way up. Next, turn the blades so they are facing out. Then measure from the tip of the blade to the ground. You should have 4 inches between the ground and the blades. If you have 4 inches, it is set up correctly. If you do not have 4 inches, I recommend adjusting the mower deck. I posted an image below that has the instructions for adjusting the deck. Just click on the image to enlarge it.

I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to reply below if you need further assistance.
