How to get rid of burnt plastic smell from dishwasher?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

We had a plastic spatula fall on the heating element during a cycle and it melted it. All of our dishes smelt of burnt plastic. We cleaned off all the plastic from the heating element and but the smell still remains. It has been about 2 weeks. We replaced the heating element but it seems like the smell is burnt into the plastic parts of the dishwasher. Will that eventually go away. We have tried baking soda and vinegar, but the smell is still there. Anytime we wash something plastic in it, the plastic smell stays on the items we washed. Any suggestions? Thanks!
