Why does my refrigerator stop cooling intermittently while the freezer is fine?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

It's a Kenmore side-by-side 10654532400. The freezer stays cold, but the fridge warms up intermittently to 50-60 degrees, and then will start cooling again. There's nothing visibly blocking the air vents.

Fred, you called it. I'm afraid I wimped out and called the repairman--it's in a rental, and time was of the essence. He found ice buildup--and a few gecko eggs--in the diffuser. It had been off for some time before the tenants moved in, which didn't help. Wish I had been able to do it myself, because I would have found it fairly quickly with your help. Thank you!

Thank you for your question.  I am sorry for the problem you are having with your

Kenmore 106.54532400 Side by Side Refrigerator

.  Intermitent problems can be difficult to pin down.  The refrigerator section gets all of its cold air from the freezer.  When the freezer continues to work but the refrigeraotr side warms up the usual suspects would be the evaporator fan, a defrost problem or a stuck air damper.  I suspect the

Air Damper

is the most likely cause of the problem.  The air damper is shown in the image below.  When the refrigerator section warms up I suggest you check the evaporator fan and check for any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer.  If the freezer stays cold then I suspect the compressor and sealed system is okay.  I hope this helps.  You can reply below with any additional detail for further assistance.  Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Thanks for the input, Alina. The difference with mine is that it's intermittent. Wanted to add that both fans are working, and the coils are as clean as possible in their hard-to-reach location. The airflow into the freezer is strong, but into the fridge seems weak.
