I have several external drives that I use for vairous purposes. Started with units from another major brand (not sure if I can mention name) and was never quite happy with the overall performance. Bought a FreeAgent and was so impressed with the throughput and quiet operation that I purchased a second. Two of the other brand units have now been shelved. The third still sees service for archives only and will be replaced when finances allow. Friends and colleagues frequently seek my advice on tech items and those to whom I have recommended Seagate have been very pleased with their purchases. One friend called from London and asked for a reccomendation so that she could bring family videos home. She purchased the Seagate and returned with files in hand. We then realized that the power adapter would not work in the US. Seagate was nice enough to send the adapter to put her back in business. That level of customer service has cemented relationships with two very happy customers.
I think Seagate drives are the best by far. I have a total of 5 external Seagate Drives and I love them all. After a disaster with a Western Digital Drive, I'll only use Seagate. Obviously I store a lot of music, movies, data, etc. and the time I have invested in creating those files is enormous. I only trust Seagate to keep it safe. Buy from Seagate and you won't be sorry! :-)
this is one of the most sensitive and unsteady drives i have dealt with. it was working fine for a while as long as you have it tucked into a secure place and DO NOT MOVE IT. if you accidentally kick or if it falls over from standing on the carpet, it will either reset itself or stop working (in my case). 3 years worth of data and i cannot access it. it has been quite frustrating.
This is my 2nd FreeAgent Drive I have bought (1st was 500 GB, 2nd was 1.5 TB). I have had NO problems at all with these drives, unlike the 1st drive I had which was a western digital 500gb drive which crashed a lot! I use this drive to store all of my photos along with my computer backups. Also, for those of you who are wondering you can use these drives with a MAC and it does work with TimeMachine, trust me I've been doing it the past 2 years (all you have to do is format the disk, which is as simple as opening disk utility and clicking erase). You can't go wrong with a Seagate, especially a FreeAgent Desk.
I have a 1TB FreeAgent desk external hard drive which I have been using for almost a year now. It worked fine till recently it suddenly decided to become "Read Only". Now, every time I try to copy from or to the hard drive the system hangs. At best, files are transferred partially.I can't delete any file either. I have tried it on a number of differenr pcs and laptops but the problem remains. Thankfully the files on the drive are working....so far. Please help.
have for 3 mounts , no problem, fast ,silent.,i use for ps3 (video, music), but if you need more speed tranfert go for usb 3.0 ,exemple for backup .
This hard drive (1 TB model) was on my desk by an open window when a wicked hail storm blew through. I noticed a dent in the housing but no drop in performance afterwards - good job, Seagate! I use this drive for backups and am currently storing my entire music collection on it so I can fit more software on my internal drive (and until I can afford a bigger internal, ha ha). I did not like the software that came with it, but I am definitely not the kind of person who uses "third-party" backup software like that so don't read too much into that. It was a little pricey, but the FireWire is great - I use this drive while editing audio and video "live" and there's no noticeable latency, which is awesome. All in all, I definitely recommend this product to someone looking for high-density, high-performance storage media. Sits nicely on a desk, slips easily into a bag, takes "routine" hardware abuse with no problem, and most importantly... IT JUST WORKS! Thanks, Seagate!
Just purchased it yesterday (6-27-2011) set it up (Windows 7 so it didn't automatically start). Left settings as they were with auto backup last night at 40 pm. Check it this morning and according to the log it skipped everything, so it's useless. I'm not completely stupid about computers, but prefer easy like plug and play. If this thing isn't that compatible with Windows 7 without a lot of work, it should have said so on the box. Went online to check out support, found a mailing address, no phone number, no online chat, etc. I had read all the reviews before and must admit the first few scared me, but the others made it sound so easy. Very unhappy
I've had my Seagate 500gb for about 2 years now. I've never had a problem with it and I put it through some hard core stress. Creating partitions, delete partitions and formating about 50 times. I've even used it to rescue Window 7 with a system image i created on a partition I had forgot about. lol TY! During one of the many formats I did manage to remove the software that came with it, not on purpose though. Still works just fine. I would definitely recommend Seagate products!!
I veri angry i buyed a hdd regenerator, but no work to fixed my 1.5 tb. hard drive, Seagate external desk free agent.i crying for all stuff loss in my hard drive.i want not more buy a this mark products.
I bought this drive a year ago and after 1 mont of use it started clicking... i've bought a new drive to backup the old one in order to replace it... 2.5 month later both of the drive were clicking the click of death again.. and i had to change them both... 4 months after again both drives were clicking and had to change them both... and now a year after one is dead again. The worst experiance i ever had with external drives !
i buyed a freeAgent desk 1.5 tb one year ago and all time listened a noise.few days ago this hard drive is not reconogzied for my pc, now a tecniccian said the hard drive is no more enable. I LOSS 15 YEARS OF WORK, PICTURES, 100,000 SONGS, 10,000 KARAOKES,5,000 VIDEOS, A ONE INEDIT BOOK, SOFWARES AND MORE STUFF. I HATE THIS.
Worked for about a year and then started to fail and would not be recognized or recognized as a bad USB device.
First time my computer crashes, and the back up hasn't backed up my files for past 5 months. All my work in the past five months have been lost! L
Fast, exact and save! No bad issues with "Seagate" since I'm using your devices! Thanks to you!
I would not recommend this at all. I have been experiencing severe loss of data with this product. There seems to be a large amount of customers with similar issues. Seagate forums for customer support have been less than useful. Minimal input from seagate employees on the forums.
It constantly crashes, and is often not recognized by my computer. It also has a tendency to stay running even after I shut down the computer. A bad purchase.
I bought the 500GB model about two and a half years ago and it has worked flawlessly since day one.A couple of months ago, my Windows XP crashed and I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Afterwards, I was able to recover all of my files from the Seagate backup drive with very little effort.I will be buying another Seagate backup drive for my new laptop soon.I suspect that at least some of the problems stated in the bad reviews are due to "Operater Error" rather than being related to a faulty product.Keep'em coming, Seagate!
I too have a death-box of all other brands. Although I still have 3 old maxtors that still work - I switched over to Seagate about 2 years ago and lever looked back since.Have several sizes - and keep adding. Am never worried about my data anymore. My Notebook had a problem, lost all data - it took only 1 hour and it was fully restored, thanks to my Seagate drive.
I bought 320mb external to back my files up......when I did nothing was on my new Toshisba laptop.....lost everything.......and was dumb enough to buy a 1,5 tb.....what was I thinking....I just bought your external desk hard drive on 03/09/12. I have just read the first 3 pages about the hard drive.Looks to me as you have alot of dissatisfied customers.I hope that the reports I read are wrong.I got tired of reading as I stated above.I do have problems with the 320 gb.Used it one time.ZAPP!!! EVERTHING GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
