Hi Brenda,

I found this information regarding chest freezers but I would check the manual for specific recommendations from the manufacturer:
How Often to Defrost

The frequency at which you defrost a chest-type freezer will depend, to some degree, on your local humidity. In a dehumidified part of your house, or in an area where there is low humidity, you will likely defrost less often. In general, though, you should defrost your freezer every 6 to 12 months.

I did see that this model has a defrost drain conveniently removes water and saves you from straining to reach the bottom of the freezer.

If you plan on purchasing, email me and I will hook you up with a money saving offer!

Hope this answered your question!

Our ken more 5 cubic chest freezer #12502 or upright #20502. They would both be perfect for freezing ice cream long term.

Hi Jack, Kenmore refrigerators are actually made by several different manufactures, Whirlpool is one of those who make refrigerators for Sears Kenmore, and thus many parts are interchangeable. If you are uncertain which ice maker kit fits your refrigerator please send us the actual model number off the refrigerator and we will be glad to research and provide the correct part number you will need.(re-post your reply)
Thanks

Yes, this freezer will work ok, however the manual does state, for the most efficient operation, it should be located in an area where the surrounding temperature does not exceed 114 degrees.
