Great carrier for the price

I have owned my X-Cargo carrier for 20 years....YES I said twenty years. I have had it on a sedan, a station wagon, a mini van and 3 different SUV's. HANDS DOWN, this carrier is great. It has never blown off, or even opened while enroute to a destination. I did however purchase the 4 brackets to mount the box to the crossbars of my roof racks. I have traveled in excess of 75 MPH with it loaded and it has never given any cause for concern. It has survived bugs, hail and a bird strike without damage. There are fancier looking carriers on the market but this one does the job and carries a bigger payload.

X-Cargo Car Top Carrier

Does not come with mounting brackets. Unfortunately, we found this out after we bought it, brought it home and put it together. We called Sears back and they said to come on up and he will get one out of another box. Once we got back to Sears, we were then told this product does not come with mounting brackets but we can purchase them for $44.00. Needless to say, not happy with this experience and product. Wish someone would have told us this information before we bought this product.

Great Price and REALLY Durable

This carrier, which is very nicely priced, is an integral part of a trailer I am building to pull behind my motorcycle. I am having the top part painted to match my Honda Gold Wing Trike. After dropping the top off at the body shop, I was coming home, carrying the box containing the bottom of the carrier in my pickup truck. Going down the road at about 80 mph, the box flew out of the truck and the piece flew out of the box, way up in the air and into a field. Much to my amazement, the bottom piece of the carrier was undamaged, despite landing on the ground and rolling end over end several times--just a few scuff marks. Needless to say, I don't think anything else I'm going to do with this carrier will match that kind of abuse, so I am confident that it will hold up!

Great Value

I have owned this exact carrier for more than 20 years. It's a bit bulky to store, but it has served well. The description says "weather resistant", but I have found it to be waterproof, even after the foam seal has crumbled away. In recent years, I have used it in the bed of my pickup to keep things that won't fit inside the cab from getting wet. When it is on top of the car, it will hurt fuel mileage maybe more than you'd think, but if you need the space, it's better than renting a small trailer.

car top carrier

A little complicated to assemble, but worked good for the design purpose. Instructions could be made a little simpler

Don't do it!

You may think, it's reasonable, it will get the job done, but do not underestimate the power of flimsy made plastic. I bought an x-cargo car top carrier to help move across the country. To great horror, a motorcyclist passing by tried to get my attention and pointed to the roof. Through the sunlight, I could see the the cargo carrier had popped open like a clam and the contents ready to spill on the highway and become incredibly dangerous to other vehicles. The front handle had popped off with the combination of highway speed, the un-aerodynamics of the cargo pod and warm weather. I was able to get off the highway, secure it with three different types of rope, then later emptied the contents and drove it to the nearest garbage can. DON'T DO IT!!!!!

Doesn't fit!!!!

I have a 09 Honda CRV. Sears book says this is the one for my vehicle with factory crossbars. I had Honda put the crossbars on. I went to Sears to have the store install it on my vehicle. It took the mechanics 11/2 hours to put it together. When they went to put it on the vehicle,it did not fit. The crossbars were to short by several inches. It seems that you need to have adjustable crossbars from the factory, not fixed, which they failed to mention in thier book. So it looks like I wasted money on the crossbars. My wife says they look sporty anyway. Is the box any good? Really can't tell you, since it didn't fit my vehicle.

Decent Carrier, but don't loose the key

We purchased ours second hand and have had it for over 6 years (It looked at least as old when we got it) and it still works. So good marks on product longevity. The major problem is getting replacement keys. I called customer service and they forwarded me to a support company that didn't even deal with parts. I've also tried quite a few places to make a replacement key ... no one has any key blanks, so no luck in copying the key.

x-cargo

the first time I saw a x-cargo was at a flea market and my wife and I were about to go on vacation in my pick up truck and I thought it would be great to put our lugage in in case it rained . that was the best buy I ever made. my wife did not think so till it pored down rain. when we got to the beach every thing was dry and in great shape. I would recommend the x-cargo it is a awsome carrier and well worth the money.

Is okay for 1 trip max!

If you are going to purchse this Cargo Carrier ensure you purchase bunji cords or other straps to keep this carrier from opening up on the highways.

We lost a lot of items traveling from one state to another state. Good luck on this investments.

Great unit, cheap entry and utility!

This unit can be tricky to put together, so be prepared to take your time with it. I mounted this unit to a Hyundai Veracruz SUV with the universal mounting kit purchased separately. My car was NOT listed as compatible, but I cannot see how this cargo unit would not fit any cars crossrails with the unversal kit. The cargo carrier holds an incredible amount of baggage and served us well on a family trip from the Hudson Valley, NY to Disney in Florida. I cannot see how the slimmer models, though more svelte and aesthetically good looking, could be as useful as this luggage bubble. I purchased this unit on sale, therefore it was nearly a hundred bucks cheaper than any other option on the market. The locks seems to secure the unit well and the spring hinges are surprisingly capable, as it never bonked me in the head while scurrying through it. I do believe it's construction or gauge of plastic used would better be served if it was thicker and sturdier, as I would not feel comfortable driving 70+ MPH while empty, but I drove to Florida at speeds greater than 75 MPH while fully loaded without incident. Make sure you tighten down on the knobs that clamp down to your cross rails several times during your journey, though this can be difficult if your vehicle is high as my own. Good Luck!!

Great addition for our small van

I purchased the car topper after some items I thought were tied down securely came lose nearly causing a major accident. We use it not only for luggage but for groceries as well. It has become an extension of our minivan.
