Great starter set

I bought this to carry in my Jeep while traveling the backcountry. It's a great combination of common tools for roadside repairs. Of course, I've supplemented it based on experience with items like vice grips, breaker bars, channel locks, and larger Torx and hex drivers that are specific to my vehicle. Still, if you need a place to start, this kit is much more rounded than the typical mechanic's tool set, with useful items like three types of hammers and assorted screwdrivers. The only cheesy tools in the kit are the dinky plastic pliers and cutters, which are tool small for most jobs.

My dad bought me this exact set of tools almost 35 years ago for my 20th birthday. Aside from a few new additions, it's the exact same set. Best gift ever! I still have most of these tools to this day and when my son turned 20 recently, I bought this set for him. He works on his own car and loves them. And, I don't have to worry about him borrowing mine and forgetting to put them back where I like them to be. Great basic set that gets you started.

have it

nice, but could be better

While this was the best general tool set I could find for my son, I still have some issues. It has too many sockets (a full set of each, shallow and deep, metric and standard, 3/8 and 1/4 drive) with a lot of overlap and no 1/2 drive big stuff. Also all sockets are six point. It has both open end and box end wrenches instead of combinations. I wish they had done away with some of the duplication and included more general tools (bigger hammer, bigger adjustable wrench and bigger channel locks etc.). That said, still much better than most mechanics sets that include only socket sets and wrenches.
