Good Mower

I bought this mower to replace my 15 year old Craftsman lawn tractor. It was delivered by Sears with minimal assembly required – basically just hook up battery and put in gas. It started easily and seemed to work fine. However, the 2nd time I started it the starter motor would not shut off – even when I turned it to the “off” position and removed the key. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. So I called Sears service. They were very nice, did not want me to start out with a mower that needed repair and said they would send another lawn tractor and pick up the broken one. I had to wait another week as I live in a rural area and they only come here on Tuesday. OK. Next Tuesday arrives and they deliver another mower and pick up the broken one. I get it started and everything seems to work. It goes forward and backward and has really good brakes. When I engage the mower blades I get a LOT of vibration. I checked to see if the blades were on tight – they were. My lawn was getting really high by now so I thought I would try it – I really didn't want to have them bring me a 3rd mower. As I mowed, the vibration seemed to gradually get better and is now what I would consider to be in a normal range. I'm guessing it was all just assembled really tight and had to loosen up a bit. Overall I'm very happy with this mower. It starts easily and has plenty of power to easily mow through very tall, wet grass. My biggest complaint, I expect, applies to all newly manufactured riding mowers. Apparently, someone has backed over and severely injured or killed a child with a lawn tractor and managed to get a large settlement from the manufacturer. As a result, you now have to stop and disengage the blades before going in reverse. In order to mow in reverse you have to stop, turn the key to a certain position then push a button next to the key, then move the lever to reverse. By the time you have used all your concentration to perform these steps just to move backward 2 feet you have now forgotten to check to see if there are children running along behind you. There needs to be a waiver for those of us who live in a neighborhood where there are no children and whose grandchildren are old enough to operate the mower, let alone stay out from behind it.

Briggs inteks made to fail!!!

Tractor itself is fine, the problem is the Briggs and Stratton intek single cyllinder motors, compression relief on cam, they are poorly designed and will fail, resulting in a no start, only fix remove engine and replace cam with the same faulty this problem before u buy any Briggs intek,i wish i had,v twins do not have this problem,Craftsman tractors are not the only ones using this motor,j Deere and others use them also, just branded as their own,$200 to $300 to fix if the grenaded compression release parts dont take out any other components,be warned.

I bought this mower 5 years ago.  It is on its 3rd transmission! When it runs it does a good job!  Sears does not stand behind their products anymore!  They don’t seem to think it’s unusual for a 5 year old mower to be on its 3rd transmission!  Save your $ and buy elsewhere!!  No I would not recommend Sears to any of my friends!  I value their friendship!

Don’t buy

Engine blew under warranty. Was fixed under warranty. Two years later it blew again. I serviced it yearly. Sears REFUSED to do anything! Stay away unless you only want it to last 3 years!
