I searched and researched relentlessly on every type of review site before purchasing this tractor. I had settled on another Craftsman tractor based on consumer reports, and then changed my mind after reading reviews of the same tractor right here. I have no negatives to share yet, The tractor mows great. Great power, and the finishing touches, like rolling over the metal edges on the body and frame, standard 4 anti scalp wheels on the mower deck, lifetime warranty on the front axle, and many other notable features show attention to detail. as delivered, all of the fluids were where they belong, the deck was perfectly leveled, and all visible fittings were greased. All of the nuts and bolts that I checked were tight. My yard is just shy of 2 acres, and is a mix of very rough terrain, flats and some very wet areas. I have had no issues with traction, or mowing abilities at all. One of the most important things frequently overlooked is to read your manual before using the tractor. As stated in the manual, all of my tire pressures were way over inflated for shipping and had to be adjusted. I have had ZERO traction issues with this mower, and I know from experience that tire pressures are critical to proper traction. It is possible the few unfavorable comments relating to traction could be tire pressure related. The Kohler engine in my experience with proper maintenance will be bullet proof and outlast the user. I have read mixed reviews of the Tufftorq transmission, but once again with proper maintenance and being used as intended, it is quite heavy duty and will give a very long service life. The only concern I have, and for no other reason than just a physics point of view, is with the tight turn. It is great around trees etc, but I can see if the wheel were turned tight, and somehow got into a hole or along side a fixed object, the forward momentum of the tractor would certainly have enough leverage against the front end to break something. Again, just an observation and my opinion. The tractor, at $2200.00 I think is a great buy for what you get, however, to me it represents a sizable investment just to mow my lawn. I am very confident that this will prove to be a good purchase decision, and will say right up front that all of the other reviews on this site of this tractor greatly influenced my decision to buy. I hope that my two cents will help someone else out as well.
Immediately had problems with mower height adjustment lever pulling out of fender. Also have loud squealing/squeaking in front end. Purchased 5 year warranty, but Sears cannot get anyone to my house for 2 weeks. Spent too much time on phone yesterday trying to get my problem addressed. I never did get it resolved.
So I went to my local Kmart first, and had seen the entry level pro series on a decent price. I had them put it on layaway because it was the only one but wanted to see if Sears had a better deal. I was right, they did. For an extra 50 dollars Last Summer. I got the 5-inch turning radius that the base model doesn't have. I got the electric blade engagement, 4 extra horsepower. And a vtwin. Not to mention the front oush bar as well. My only disappointment was they can only deliver it on a Tuesday between noon and 2 which I would never have been there for. Because I work like most people in this country. So I called the store and they told me that I could only have it delivered. They don't have any in stock to just let you pick up. I convinced him to let me take the display model. It's great
I purchased this mower exclusively for the 3 bagger they claimed would fit it. I get the mower and bagger and the bagger doesn't fit! Then I'm told "sorry the bagger isn't as advertised and does not fit your particular 46" deck. Bagger advertisement says, "bagger fits all 46" decks"(Sears Item # 07124904000). Now I’m stuck with a mower and bagger combo that spits more trimmings on the yard than in the bagger. SNAFU SEARS!! Never again! Sears should exchange mower and bagger for something that works!! Never again!
I just cut the lawn for the first time with this unit and I LOVE THIS MOWER ! The turning radius is just amazing and the way it’s built is great. No problems whatsoever but you have to actually read and follow the directions when you first set it up. It mows great and is a sharp looking tractor. The only complaint I have is although the seat is nice and cumfy it has to much side to side spring for my taste. When you’re on a slight slope it feels like you’re going to slide off the seat. Looking into getting a seat with armrest for it if possible and the other thing is I’d like to be able to turn the headlights on and off myself. Don’t really want to add a switch to it but I may. The seat is great quality but as I said it’s just to sloppy side to side for my taste. I like to feel solid and secure when mowing slight slopes.
Awesome tractor...Quiet relatively for how big engine is. 24hp! Tight turn is a must and works great. Easy to start! Easy to steer and comfortable seat. Pto button is slick. Cruise control...ok thanks! Wow. Just very nice. Bought it on sale so I think I got a deal for all the features. Bought the mulch kit too and mulches perfectly Working on setting up.app...And of course it Looks tough and cool!
I recently purchased the 27042 and find it to be everything advertised, excellent mower and value at $1979. We'll see if it lasts 14 year like my ********** L120 that this mower replaced. I paid $2700 for the L120 20 HP 48" cut back then. BTW, our local Deere dealer wants $3500 for a 22 HP 42" mower now...really? Less horses, less features, less value...no thanks. This Craftsman 27042 mower is extremely powerful and delivers a perfectly level cut; I have 2 acres with hills and use a cart to pull heavy loads. I hope the Tuff Torque tranny (same exact one as on my old Deere) holds up a long time. I love the near zero-turn radius... I see other reviews stating that the wheels tear up the lawn when turning all the way; my suggestion is to SLOW DOWN ... you can't turn that tightly while driving like Mario Andretti; if you care for your lawn and your mower you need to take your time and do it right. The Smart Lawn phone app did not work well at first but now works 100% as stated, I'm not sure why the sudden fix - but I'm good with it...I suspect an app update was pushed out to me. The app is quite useful; all those who gave bad reviews for the app need to reload it and try again, Craftsman fixed it and it works very well. The mulch kit works great, too; just make sure you buy the correct one - there seems to be some confusion as to which mulch kit fits this 27042 mower. The consumer agencies recommend this mower as the best, which surprised me I must say; so I did my research and bought it - no regrets. But if I do have problems I have confidence that Sears will stand behind their product, as they always have for me. Good job Sears and Craftsman!
