I have been waiting for the Gladiator six foot Maple top to go on sale close to the black Friday price of $250. I happened across this stainless steel top on sale for about the same price. I think the stainless will hold up better for automotive style repairs than the wood top. Bench is stable and strong. Top quality is the weakest link on this table. Corners in picture show a nice welded bead finishing the edge. But you get a stamped piece of metal that feels loose in corners. Make sure not to over tighten the lag bolts that hold the top to the legs or they will strip out. Nice addition to garage. If you get it on sale it worth the money.
Workbench is very sturdy and looks nice. Countertop would also look good if corners were finished. The picture shows nice smooth corners, but I have ordered two and returned both because the corners aren't finished. There is a gap where the SS meets on the edges. This leaves two jagged edges sticking out. When I talk to someone at Craftsman or Sears they just say order another one it should be right. Someone should check the item in the warehouses. I don't think anyone wants a countertop with jagged corners.
After extensive searching for a stainless steel top workbench, I found the Craftsman 6' model. There were several benches available from a variety of vendors. Many were priced out of my budget, not to mention the cost of shipping. The Craftsman checked all the boxes for the features I desired. The bench had adjustable legs, substantial weight rating, stainless steel top, and was affordably priced. The only thing I was skeptical about were the reviews I read mentioned the corners on the top were not welded. I decided all the other positives outweighed the one negative and ordered the bench. I was pleasantly surprised to find the new bench had welded corners making the purchase well worth the money.
The set up for the new style benches is so much easier than the old ones. The adjustable legs are nice as well since I’m a taller guy. However, I do feel that the gauge and quality of the stainless steel top is less than the older ones but that’s probably just the thickest they can get over there in China. Either way, very nice product.
I bought the 8 foot which for some reason is no longer available. In any case, this is an excellent workbench, especially for the money. Craftsman still makes high quality items, despite what others say. Too bad the corporation is doing poorly nationwide. I feel that if other knew of the quality and price available, Sears would have a resurgence.
